Veteran FAQ

Plain-English answers. If you're in crisis right now: call 988, press 1.

What is the Veterans Crisis Line number?

Dial 988 and press 1. You can also text 838255 or chat online at veteranscrisisline.net. It's free, confidential, 24/7, and open to all U.S. veterans, service members, and family — you do not have to be enrolled in VA care.

Is Valor free for veterans?

Yes. Valor is free for U.S. veterans and service members. There are no ads and your data is not sold. You can use it anonymously with a call sign — no real name required.

Is Valor affiliated with the VA?

No. Valor is independent and not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We help you navigate VA benefits, claims, and Community Care, but we are not the VA.

Who is Valor for?

Post-9/11 U.S. veterans across all branches — Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard — Active, Reserve, Guard, and discharged. Spouses and family can join through an invite from a vet.

What does Valor actually do?

A 30-second daily check-in (mood, sleep, PCL-5 micro-pulse), a private squad of 6–8 veterans matched by branch and deployment era, an AI battle buddy named REX, automated crisis routing to peer specialists and 988, a Stanley-Brown safety plan, sobriety and means-safety tracking, and a VA navigator for claims, Community Care, and benefits.

Is there an app for veteran PTSD?

Several. The VA publishes PTSD Coach. Valor is different in that it combines PTSD tracking (PCL-5), peer squad support, AI check-ins, and direct routing to the Veterans Crisis Line in one place — and it works whether or not you're in VA care.

How do I file a VA disability claim?

File at va.gov/disability/file-disability-claim-form-21-526ez or work with a free Veterans Service Officer (VSO) from DAV, VFW, or your state. Valor's Paperwork module helps you prep a claim and track its status; we don't file it for you.

Does Valor store my data privately?

Yes. Journal entries, check-ins, and safety plans are private to you. Peer specialists only see what you choose to share or what an active crisis routes to them. Nothing is sold. You can delete your account and data any time.

Can family members use Valor?

A family / spouse view is in development. For immediate family support today, Vets4Warriors (1-855-838-8255) has a 24/7 line for family members of veterans.

How do I get free gun locks?

Free cable gun locks are available from Project ChildSafe and most VA medical centers. Means safety — locking up firearms and medications during a crisis — is the single most effective intervention against veteran suicide.
